This report is based on the intervention of GenE-HumDi members in front of the Committee for Advanced Therapies (CAT) during the Strategic Review and Learning Meeting held in Paphos, Cyprus on April 19-21. This intervention was convened under the Cypriot presidency. GenE-HumDi aim is bringing together academic researchers, clinical innovators, and regulatory authorities, our delegation presented key breakthroughs and established vital connections to accelerate the journey of safe gene-edited treatments from the lab to patients.
Key highlights presented to the CAT include:

  • Advancing Safer, High-Precision Editing: Network researchers showcased state-of-the-art editing technologies designed to significantly lower safety risks. By transitioning from traditional DNA-cutting methods to ultra-precise base editing and DNA break-free epigenome modifications, our teams are opening safer pathways for treating genetic blood disorders (such as thalassemia) and enhancing cell therapies.
  • Building a Connected European Research Network: Through funded short-term scientific missions and hands-on training schools, GenE-HumDi is actively democratizing cutting-edge expertise. We are enabling early-career scientists across Europe to share specialized tools, master safety testing pipelines, and collaborate across borders.
  • Integrating Regulatory Standards into Early Research: To prevent promising therapies from stalling behind regulatory barriers, our presentations highlighted the importance of teaching young scientists about regulatory compliance, genomic safety profiles, and quality manufacturing from the early stages of project design.
  • Forging Direct Pathways with Regulators: Interactive discussions with CAT leadership focused on establishing early-stage support channels, such as EMA briefing sessions. This dialogue ensures academic innovators receive clear guidance long before clinical trials begin.
  • Co-Creating Shared Standards and Guidelines: To bridge the gap between scientific discovery and approval, GenE-HumDi and CAT delegates agreed to collaborate on joint consensus papers and involve regulatory experts directly as guest educators in future network training events.

By linking cutting-edge genetic innovation directly with regulatory expertise, GenE-HumDi is helping shape a clearer, safer, and more accessible future for advanced gene therapies across Europe.
